Frequently asked questions

When should I see a fertility specialist

If you are a couple under 35 years of age, you had regular intercourse without contraception for 1 year and did not conceive. This period is reduced to 6 months if you are between 35 and 39 years of age and to 3 months if you are over 40. Of course there are exceptions. Patients with irregular menstrual cycles (35 days or longer) or those who suffered from pelvic inflammatory disease ought to see a fertility specialist earlier.

What is the cost of infertility treatment

The cost of infertility treatment depends mainly on infertility factor and a woman's age. It usually runs from a few hundred to a few thousand Polish zlotys (PLN).

What is the efficiency of infertility treatment?

Thanks to amazing progress in pharmacotherapy, microsurgery and assisted reproductive techniques (ART) almost two thirds of couples who are treated for infertility are able to have a baby. This rate is significantly higher among couples who decided to use assisted reproductive techniques. It is estimated that pregnancy rate for couples using ART is comparable with pregnancy rate for healthy couples during one cycle. It is easier to estimate the probability of conceiving after first consultations, laboratory tests, and suspected cause of infertility. It usually varies depending on a couple and infertility factor.

What is the risk of having twins, triplets or even higher order pregnancy?

Multiple pregnancy is an unfavorable complication of infertility treatment. This is why in most cases of ovarian stimulation for intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) a singleton pregnancy is achieved. In the USA twin pregnancy rate is approximately 25% and triplet pregnancy rate is 5%. In our centre twin pregnancy rate is 15% and triplet pregnancy rate is less than 1%. We did have higher order pregnancy.

Is it safe to become pregnant after 40?

Many women around their 40's will give a birth to a healthy baby. Nevertheless, the risk of chromosome disorders such as Down's syndrome and other pregnancy abnormalities such as diabetes during pregnancy or hypertension gets higher with age. Genetic screening is performed to identify fetal genetic defects at the early stages of pregnancy. Proper diet and regular consultations with your physician can decrease the risk of possible complications during pregnancy.

How long treatment with Clomiphene citrate (CC) should last?

Most patients demonstrate good response to CC already in the first cycle. In such cases the treatment should not take more than three correctly stimulated cycles. If a couple does not conceive during three cycles with confirmed ovulation, other methods of ovarian stimulation should be taken into consideration.

Is there any list of patients waiting for IVF procedure?

There is no such thing as the waiting list. After consultation with our doctor and the decision to become our patient, you immediately begin appropriate treatment.

What is the effectiveness of your team?

When we are dealing with male factor infertility?

Male infertility is usually caused by a decreased number of spermatozoa in sperm, or their poor quality (impaired motility or morphology). This type of infertility can be diagnosed when the concentration of spermatozoa is less than 20 million per 1 ml, the motility is impaired in more than 50% of spermatozoa, or there is less than 30% (WHO) or 14% (Kruger's criteria) of spermatozoa having normal structure.

What are the possibilities of male factor treatment?

There are a few methods. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) depending on sperm quality. In case of a total lack of spermatozoa in sperm a testicular biopsy is performed to find spermatozoa capable of fertilization (testicular sperm aspiration - TESA or percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration - PESA). Surgical treatment for spermatic cord varicocele is recommended only in some cases. Please remember that expectant management has a very low efficiency.

What is oligozoospermia?

This means that the concentration of spermatozoa is less than 20 million per 1 ml

What is azoospermia?

Azoospermia is a complete absence of spermatozoa in sperm.

How many times is it reasonable to undergo IVF procedure?

Theoretically, after four unsuccessful IVF attempts, the chances of conceiving significantly decrease. It is customary to perform up to six IVF procedures. However, we know patients who conceive on their seventh attempt at IVF.
